Club Meetings & Club Runs

Southport Cycling Club meet in their clubroom in Victoria Park, Rotten Row (by the entrance opposite Beach Road) every Monday evening at 7.30 p.m. New member and vistors are welcome to attend the informal gathering. To find the location of the club room the postode is PR8 2BZ. Click here for map. (The club room is at the arrow)

Note New meeting point for Saturday -Open area on Banks Road opposite to the Pumping Station entrance. See map below

This will start with effect from this Saturday (11th July) There is an area with no houses, a turn in where people can congregate and a safer start point for moving off in a number of separated groups without the hazard of negotiating the Plough roundabout.

The Saturday morning club run of about 30 miles leaves at 9:30; pedalling through Banks village to Tarleton at a lesuirely pace, and through the quiet back roads to Croston village and on to a cafe stop for a brew. The return route over the moss arrives back in Southport by about mid day. There are also faster / longer rides depending on the number of members who are riding on any given Saturday. The weekday runs also depart from the Plough bus stop; Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 9.30hrs. (see below for Wednesday)

The Saturday and weekday runs are covered at a more comfortable pace, so if you’re new to cycling these runs are the way to start. If you are new to cycling you should make sure someone in the group knows who you are and that this is your first ride with the club.

A longer Sunday Run leaves the Plough at 9.15 –  picking up riders from points East of Southport at Blackgate Lane End 9.30 am and heading North of the Ribble.  Rides are typically over 60 miles with one cafe stop ( or sometimes two) – rising to over 100 miles in the summer months. Destination is generally chosen ‘on the day’ depending upon weather and make up of the group.  It’s normally ridden at a fairly brisk pace 16 – 19mph average. A ‘groupetto’ often forms if some riders find the pace a bit challenging, particularly when we hit the hills, but is rarely more than about 10 minutes in arrears by the cafe stop irrespective of terrain! Someone will always wait if there is a slower rider who is unfamiliar with the Bowland and Fylde lanes.

There is also a “B” group ride most Sundays which leaves the bus stop at 9.30. and covers a shorter distance at a more leisurely pace. If you are “new” make sure that you check out which group is which

Please read this if you are new to riding in a group
“Guide to the Etiquette of Group Riding”

Woodvale Wednesday Ride

In view of the number of club members living South of town, we now have a Wednesday club run with the Grand Depart from Ainsdale Police Sation at 9.30.

Route–Formby-Altcar-Downholland-Clieves Hill-Ormskirk-Town Green-Burscough-Lathom-Mawdsley……Cedar Farm cafe stop…….return via…Curlew Lane-Martin Inn-Pool Hey-Scarisbrick. This would be a group ride, steady pace, staying together. It would NOT be a training ride!

Anyone with a road worthy bike is welcome to join in.

3rd Sunday of the Month Ride

On the third Sunday each month there is an organised ride to a chosen location. These rides are longer than the weekday rides but are ridden at a steady pace.

Juniors

Club runs for Juniors and Schoolboys take place most Sundays. The start location is the Club room in Victoria Park (see link to map on this page). Meet at 9.15. a.m. for a 9.30 start. Bikes are available for loan if you do not have one of your own. Check with the Secretary, Ken Beck on 01704 228968 if it is your first time.
