NEW YEARS DAY RIDE-IRON MEN 2018

A cool breezy morning greeted the assembled riders at the clubhouse this morning for the 9th Annual ride to the Iron Men at Crosby…

On the inaugural ride there were 6 members, each year since has seen the numbers swell for this popular event to get rid of hangovers from the festivities of the season.

A variety of machines were on display, mostly off-road bikes others on road bikes and a Fat Tyre included .

As in the past we have deviated slightly to visit Dave Dwyer on his balcony in Westbourne Road(Dave was a former member who suffered an horrific accident 6 years ago near Clieves Hill),he appreciates the gesture.

Onwards along the Coastal Road cycle track to the entrance of the Pinewoods at Ainsdale, where we were met by those who couldn’t make it (or be bothered to be at the start),
When everyone stood still for a minute or two I counted 24 riders of all shapes and sizes and some even on road bikes. This a record number for the event… Almost immediately Neil Langridge suffered the puncture bogey and was assisted by Pete SCOTT.

Through the Pinewoods towards Freshfield, carefully and skill fully negotiating the puddles and avoiding joggers in the opposite direction.. politely ringing one’s bell seems to be appropriate.

Once at Victoria Road, some riders took the Asparagus path towards Formby, whilst others opted to stay on the tarmac and make their way to start of the cycle path to Hightown.
That group arriving at the mobile coffee wagon ahead of the others, who turned up some time after with the story that Howard had punctured (good to see on this occasion he opted not to wear white trainers!). The area was packed out with cars and walkers alike
at this immensely popular tourist venue,as the tide was in the Iron Men were almost invisible(very similar to the Club Chairman Allan Taylor when he sits at the back of the peloton !)

After refreshments, the group decided to split up,most opting to ride back the reverse route, while others opted for the longer Cheshire Lines journey. Through Formby and the now typical ‘which way’ shouts causing no end of confusion we eventually found our way back to the by-pass..James Holloway our youngest rider thought it was hilarious..

All in all a good morning out,I feel sure everyone enjoyed it, the weather was kind to us as it stayed dry, although all the bikes are full of mud and kit needs washing.

Thanks to all who turned up,looking forward to seeing you all on the road in the coming weeks.

Cheers and all best for 2018.
